Tour description of the Circum-Baikal Railway
The Circum-Baikal Railway begins in the village of Kultuk and ends 88 kilometers later in the village of Baikal (popularly known as Port Baikal).
If you plan to visit the Circum-Baikal Railway on a special tourist train, keep in mind that there are two routes: from Kultuk to Port Baikal and a mirror route, from Port Baikal to Kultuk. In the first case, a minibus from the tour operator will take you directly to Kultuk, you’ll continue by train to Port Baikal, and then you’ll be transferred by boat to Listvyanka, from where you’ll return to Irkutsk by minibus. The mirror route is the exact opposite.
Along the Circum-Baikal Railway, the train makes stops at the most picturesque spots for photos and to explore the tunnels and other structures.
If you’re looking for a guide to walk the Circum-Baikal Railway, firstly, it’s very difficult; walking on the railway tracks is incredibly inconvenient, and paths along the tracks appear only periodically. The total distance of 88 kilometers will take you approximately three days, including two overnight stays. Due to the long travel time and difficulty, a guide’s services will be quite expensive.
